Beef farming with wildlife and carbon capture

Pasture raised beef

The farm sells some of its home-grown beef direct to the public via a beef box scheme with pre-arranged collection from the farm. Reared on traditionally managed pastures, the meat is hung to ensure exceptional flavour. A 10kg box typically contains a selection of steaks such as sirloin, rump and quick frying steak, then there are roasting joints and a range of stewing steaks, braising steaks and mince. The beef cuts are individually weighed, labelled and vacuum packed ready for the freezer (a box typically fits into one drawer of a large upright freezer). Buy a whole box or share a 10kg box with others. The fillet is sold separately.

Our mob grazing system is developing approaches for increasing soil organic matter and capturing carbon in soil. This approach allows grasses and other diverse plants to grow tall creating valuable habitats. We are involved in a long term trial examining this approach, being run by ADAS, Newcastle and Bangor University.

Cattle are a mixture of two traditional British breeds, the Sussex and Hereford. Welfare is paramount on the estate with the animals kept on fresh pasture during the summer months and housed in large open sided sheds during the winter months where they have a hay and grass silage diet under the watchful eye of Mick, the stockman.
